Biographies for Note-able Singers

Judy Reed Adkins, Soprano 
Has been with NS for 13 years, president for 5 years.  Also sings with the Velvet Tones, an Apple Valley choral group.  Previously sang with the Control Data Singers for 4 years, plays the saxophone, studied piano for two years, and played the organ at church.  Studied voice for 3 years and is a Burnsville resident. 
Theo Coenen, Mezzo 
Eleven years with NS.  Studied piano throughout school.  Played clarinet in high school band.  Accompanied choir in high school.  Graduated St. Catherine’s College.  Sang in church choir.  Presently studying jazz piano.  Resident of Richfield. 
 
Mary Nessel Erickson, Soprano 
Grew up in musical family.  Began piano lessons in kindergarten and continued through grade school.  Studied dance at McPhail and enjoyed singing, dancing and duets in high school.  Has sung with Sweet Adelines, church choir and Mother Singers.  Joined NS last fall and has enjoyed this fun group. 
 
Dawn Greimel, Alto 
Joined NS last year and states, “singing in harmony is one of life’s pleasures.”  Sings tenor in church choir and directed Young at Heart chorus at the Richfield Community Center.  Enjoys singing with her family and 20 grandchildren. 
 
Rebecca Fahlin, Alto 
Joined NS in 1995 and has enjoyed her involvement.  Served as representative in the Bloomington Fine Arts Council in 2001-02. Started singing when she was one and continued vocal development with the help of teachers and choir directors.  Is on the list of donors for the Center for the Arts Building Fund. 
 
Marian Horning, Mezzo 
Joined original Sugar and Spice Singers in second year with other members of Richfield Mother Singers.  Sang in church choirs for many years.  Enjoys performing with NS and treasures the friendships made over the years. 
 
Ginny Laughinghouse, Alto 
Charter member of NS 30 years ago, then known as Sugar and Spice Singers.  Was in many school and church choirs and also played clarinet in Princeton, New Jersey.  Has been a foster mom of medically fragile children for 23 years and has recently been chosen as one of the “11 Who Care” for Kare 11-TV. 
 
Sally Kail, Mezzo 
Second year singing with NS.  Received degree in Speech and Theatre Arts from U of M and has taken graduate courses in Cinematography, as well as Screenwriting.  Is a published song writer, produced several CDs and worked with professional singers/music arrangers in the music industry.  Assists with NS choreograph
Candace McClenahan, Soprano 
Began studying piano as a child.  In high school, served as church organist and choir accompanist, and played cornet and French horn.  Sang in college choir and church choir before motherhood, until graduate school and career as college teacher and administrator claimed full-time attention.  Re-connected with musical interests and a desire to “sing for the fun of it” by joining NS in 2003. 
 
Judy Nurkkala, Director 
Tenth year of directing NS.  Studied voice privately and has sung with the University of Minnesota Chorus, Finlandia University Choir, Evangelica Cantanti and various ensembles. Began studying piano in kindergarten. Has been a church pianist, organist and choir director. Accompanist for soloists and choral groups. Played the clarinet in bands and ensembles. Is now a private piano teacher. 
 
 
Miriam Spears, Mezzo 
Charter member of NS, singing since early childhood, and in choirs, trios at church and schools; plays the piano.  Has played the cello.  Married 43 years, mother of six and grandmother of 1
